{"id":222,"date":"2026-08-08T15:51:57","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:51:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=222"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:51:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:51:58","slug":"flattery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=222","title":{"rendered":"Flattery"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a spell that doesn&#8217;t push you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It lifts you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Flattery.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It tells you something about yourself that you very much enjoy hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You&#8217;re different.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You&#8217;re smarter than most people.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You&#8217;re the only person I can trust with this.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I knew you would understand.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it&#8217;s true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s what makes Flattery such an interesting spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lie is easy to reject when you know it&#8217;s a lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a flattering thing can be completely true and still be used as a spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The magic isn&#8217;t necessarily in the compliment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The magic is in what the compliment makes you <strong>want to become.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone tells you that you&#8217;re exceptionally perceptive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you may become reluctant to admit you missed something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone tells you that you&#8217;re the only reasonable person in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now disagreeing with them might feel like betraying your identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone tells you that you&#8217;re strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now perhaps you feel ashamed when you need help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The compliment has become a leash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A very comfortable leash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perception Check: What happened immediately after the compliment?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the easiest ways to notice Flattery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listen to the sequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Compliment \u2192 Request.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;You&#8217;re so good at this. Could you do this for me?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Compliment \u2192 Loyalty.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;You&#8217;re one of the few people I can really trust.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Compliment \u2192 Identity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;You&#8217;re not like those other people.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The compliment may be genuine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But now something has been attached to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at the attachment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identity Check: What version of me is being offered?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flattery often works by presenting you with a beautiful identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The smart one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strong one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The generous one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brave one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The special one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reasonable one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then quietly implying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If you are really that person, you will do this.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s the spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;You are wonderful.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Wonderful people do what I want.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Counterspell: Accept Without Owing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is a beautiful little skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone compliments you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let it land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to reject it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to become suspicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can simply say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Thank you.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t owe someone access because they noticed something good about you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t owe agreement because they praised your judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t owe a favor because they called you generous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A compliment can remain a compliment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn&#8217;t have to become a contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advanced Counterspell: Be Willing to Disappoint the Image<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the spell really loses its grip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose someone thinks you&#8217;re incredibly strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then you need help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose someone thinks you&#8217;re brilliant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then you don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose someone thinks you&#8217;re exceptionally kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then you need to say no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are allowed to disappoint someone&#8217;s picture of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, this may be one of the clearest signs that the picture belongs to them rather than you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Strange Truth<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another reason Flattery deserves respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all cast it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parents do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teachers do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friends do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lovers do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can strengthen someone with a genuine recognition of something beautiful in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;You&#8217;re really good at this.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;I trust you.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;You handled that well.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those words can change someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can become a lantern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So the lesson isn&#8217;t:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Never believe compliments.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That would be another kind of blindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lesson is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Receive the warmth without surrendering your steering wheel.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone can see something wonderful in you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone can even be completely right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let yourself enjoy being seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You are allowed to be more than the version of you that someone else finds flattering.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if someone tells you that you&#8217;re special?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say thank you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then watch what happens next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is where the spell reveals itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
