class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a spell that makes ordinary things feel like emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Urgency.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is one of the oldest spells in human conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You need to decide now.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This is your last chance.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Don&#8217;t think about it too much.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>If you wait, you&#8217;ll miss it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the emergency is real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fire is urgent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A child running into traffic is urgent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A glass tipping toward the edge of the table is urgent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a surprising amount of what feels urgent is simply <strong>important to someone else right now.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And those are not the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Urgency changes the quality of your thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your attention narrows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your body prepares to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of possibilities you can comfortably consider gets smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That can be useful when something genuinely needs immediate action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can also make you remarkably easy to steer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why Urgency is such an effective spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn&#8217;t have to convince you that something is true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It only has to convince you that <strong>you don&#8217;t have time to find out.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perception Check: Is there actually a clock?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you feel rushed, ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What happens if I wait?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not what someone says will happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What actually happens?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will the opportunity disappear?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will someone be physically harmed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Will a real deadline pass?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or will somebody simply become annoyed that you haven&#8217;t answered yet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are very different kinds of clocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn to tell them apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Body Check: Did my thinking speed up?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the moment your internal tempo changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your heart picks up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your breathing gets shallow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You start composing an answer before the other person has finished speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You feel that strange pressure:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I need to do something.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s useful information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to obey it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can notice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Ah.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The spell is active.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Language Check: Listen for the clock hiding in the sentence.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Right now.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Today only.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Before it&#8217;s too late.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;You need to decide.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;If you really cared, you wouldn&#8217;t wait.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Don&#8217;t overthink it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of these phrases are automatically manipulative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes there really is a deadline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the presence of a clock should make you look at the clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not simply believe it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Counterspell: Slow<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t need a dramatic refusal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can simply slow the scene down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;I&#8217;ll think about it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Let me sleep on it.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;I want to look at this first.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;I&#8217;ll get back to you tomorrow.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the most powerful thing you can say is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Not yet.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And watch what happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A genuine emergency will still be an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A real deadline will still exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But artificial urgency often becomes strangely less impressive once you refuse to dance at its speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advanced Counterspell: Create Your Own Deadline<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another trick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you actually need to decide, don&#8217;t let somebody else&#8217;s urgency become your decision-making system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make your own clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;I&#8217;ll decide by Friday.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;I&#8217;ll give you an answer after I&#8217;ve looked at the numbers.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;I&#8217;m going to take twenty minutes and come back to this.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the clock belongs to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the goal of spellcraft isn&#8217;t to become slow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s to become <strong>deliberate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes deliberate action is incredibly fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A trained person can move immediately because they have already learned what deserves immediate movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That isn&#8217;t being controlled by urgency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Final Check<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When something feels urgent, ask three questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What happens if I wait?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who benefits from me deciding quickly?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Would I make the same decision if I had a week?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may still choose the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now it&#8217;s your choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spell has been seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes, once you see it, you discover that the urgency was real all along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s fine too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every spell is an enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some are alarms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some are invitations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some are just people speaking quickly because they&#8217;re excited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The skill is not learning to distrust urgency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is learning to distinguish:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;This needs to happen now.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">from<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;I need you to feel like this needs to happen now.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those are two very different
