will eat your heart like cereals.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t know who said it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t know who <em>they<\/em> are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I don&#8217;t know why your heart has apparently become breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Waiting for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are sentences that arrive carrying explanations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This wasn&#8217;t one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This one arrived carrying a spoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps that&#8217;s the way some truths enter us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not as revelations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not as thunder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just a small voice in the kitchen saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You should probably know this.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon they will eat your heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They always do, eventually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world takes pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People take pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love takes pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memory takes pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You give some away willingly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Others are taken without asking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some pieces are lost simply because you were alive long enough for them to fall out of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet we keep growing another heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or pretending we do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We wake up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Answer messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Go to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fall in love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Get hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Laugh at something stupid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Buy groceries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Come home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And somewhere between all of these ordinary things, someone is sitting at the table eating us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like cereals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is something almost insulting about the casualness of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Crunch.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another little piece of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Crunch.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Crunch.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another hope you weren&#8217;t quite ready to give away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Crunch.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another version of yourself that thought it knew what was going on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps this is why we build walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps this is why we become careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps this is why we learn to hold our hearts like precious objects and say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nobody gets this.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a heart that cannot be eaten cannot really be shared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And a heart that cannot be shared has become something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stone, perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A relic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A very well-protected little organ sitting in a museum while life happens outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I think I would rather risk it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let them eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let them take their little spoonful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let love leave teeth marks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let grief have breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let strangers carry away pieces of me I never knew they needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let the world be hungry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I will make another heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because the old one wasn&#8217;t enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because apparently that&#8217;s what hearts do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They feed things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They grow back strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They keep beating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And tomorrow morning, someone may sit down at the table again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may lift their spoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may look directly at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And I may realize that I have been feeding them all along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s alright.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have eaten hearts too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the arrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The strange little breakfast table of being alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon they will eat your heart like cereals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So eat theirs back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not out of cruelty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Out of participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Out of love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Out of the ancient understanding that nothing living gets to remain untouched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when the bowl is empty, get up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wash the spoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Go outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a whole world waiting to take another bite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
