{"id":208,"date":"2026-08-08T06:31:37","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T06:31:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=208"},"modified":"2026-08-08T06:31:38","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T06:31:38","slug":"soon-they-will-eat-your-heart-like-cereal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=208","title":{"rendered":"Soon, They Will Eat Your Heart Like Cereal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a particular kind of freedom that looks, from a distance, like having no boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You become available to everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room enters you.<br>The stranger enters you.<br>The grief enters you.<br>The beautiful thing enters you.<br>The stupid thing enters you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon, they will eat your heart like cereal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you will be standing there wondering when exactly you agreed to this arrangement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps the mistake is in imagining that the heart was ever a fortress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We spend an enormous amount of energy building little walls around ourselves. We call them boundaries, identities, principles, preferences, defenses, reputations. Some of them are necessary. Some of them are beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some are just very elaborate ways of saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Please don&#8217;t touch me there.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is nothing wrong with that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A boundary can be an act of love. It can tell the world where the garden ends and the road begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But eventually you may discover something strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The garden was never the boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The garden was what happened inside it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And once you understand that, the question changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How do I keep the world out?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You begin asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What can I allow to pass through me without becoming it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a different kind of strength.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tree has no walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has bark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A river has no fence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has a direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sky does not defend itself from birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It simply remains the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is what I mean by a life without boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a life where everyone gets access to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a life where you say yes to everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a life where you become so spiritually enlightened that someone can walk into your house and steal your television while you smile peacefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please lock your door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The point is not having no boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The point is discovering that <strong>you are larger than the boundaries you need.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a difference between protecting yourself and constructing yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Protection says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This is where I stop you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Construction says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This is where I stop myself.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes the walls we built to survive become the walls we later mistake for our personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We forget that they were temporary architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We forget that we built them during weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then one day the storm is gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And we&#8217;re still living inside the bunker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So perhaps life without boundaries is not about tearing down every wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps it is about opening the doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Going outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Letting something surprise you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Letting someone matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Letting beauty ruin your schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Letting grief sit beside you without immediately turning it into a lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Letting yourself be changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because being changed is frightening when you have spent your whole life believing that stability means remaining untouched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But nothing alive remains untouched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The apple becomes the deer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deer becomes the forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The forest becomes the soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The soil becomes the apple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And somewhere in the middle of this enormous exchange, we point at one temporary arrangement and say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This is me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a useful fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes we need it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But don&#8217;t confuse the map for the territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are not a sealed container.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are an event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are something happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breathing in.<br>Breathing out.<br>Taking in.<br>Giving back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A temporary shape through which the universe gets to experience itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which brings us back to the cereal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because eventually someone is going to eat your heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The point is that everything you love will eventually consume some part of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person you loved will carry a sentence you said for twenty years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stranger will remember your kindness when you have completely forgotten giving it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A child will become an adult partly because you were there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A song will contain a piece of you long after you stopped listening to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone will take what you gave them and digest it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is what giving yourself to life means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not get to keep every piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps that is not loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps that is participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon, they will eat your heart like cereal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So make it nutritious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put something good in there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make it strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make it tender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make it strong enough to be consumed without becoming meaningless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when the bowl is empty, don&#8217;t worry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world has a remarkable appetite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There will always be another heart growing somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another strange little creature wandering around pretending to be separate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another garden waiting for someone to forget where the fence is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Go carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Go openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lock the door when necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Open it when you can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A boundary is useful.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A wall is sometimes necessary.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>But you were never the wall.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
