{"id":200,"date":"2026-08-08T06:05:46","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T06:05:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=200"},"modified":"2026-08-08T06:05:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T06:05:46","slug":"the-ten-questions-for-when-you-have-no-idea-what-youre-doing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=200","title":{"rendered":"The Ten Questions for When You Have No Idea What You&#8217;re Doing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a particular kind of stuck that happens after you&#8217;ve already tried everything you know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not laziness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not indecision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a lack of effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have pulled every lever you know how to pull. You&#8217;ve consulted the map. You&#8217;ve checked the compass. You&#8217;ve retraced your steps. You&#8217;ve tried the clever solution and the simple solution and the solution that worked last time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are baffled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is an important state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because when you have exhausted your known answers, the temptation is to keep producing more of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are very good at this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can worry harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can analyze the same information from seventeen different angles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We can invent increasingly elaborate explanations for why the explanation we already have must be correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the next move isn&#8217;t another answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it is a better question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when I am completely baffled, these are the questions I want available to me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. What am I assuming is true?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is usually something underneath the problem that I have quietly declared to be a fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A surprising amount of bafflement disappears when you find the invisible premise holding the whole puzzle together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. What if this isn&#8217;t actually the problem?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I may be solving the thing that is easiest to see rather than the thing that actually needs solving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A symptom can be very convincing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is still a symptom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the door you have been trying to open isn&#8217;t the door you need to walk through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. What would change my mind?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of my favorites because it cuts both ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>What can I find that proves I&#8217;m right?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>What would I have to discover for me to admit that I&#8217;m wrong?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the answer is &#8220;nothing,&#8221; I am no longer investigating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am defending a position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. What am I refusing to notice because I don&#8217;t like the answer?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This one costs something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are answers we cannot see because they are hidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And there are answers we cannot see because we have seen them perfectly well and don&#8217;t want them to be true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those are different problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second one requires courage rather than intelligence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. What haven&#8217;t I tried because it seems too simple?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When sufficiently clever people become stuck, they sometimes construct an elaborate machine around an unlocked door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The simple answer can feel insulting after you&#8217;ve spent six hours being sophisticated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try it anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reality does not care whether the solution feels impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. What would I do if I couldn&#8217;t understand this yet?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This question separates understanding from action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes I don&#8217;t need to know <em>why<\/em> something is happening before I can take the next safe step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t understand this&#8221; does not necessarily mean &#8220;I cannot proceed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may only mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I cannot proceed according to my usual method.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s useful information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Who would see this differently?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not necessarily someone smarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone with different experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different incentives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different fears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different skin in the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A problem can look completely different when viewed from another shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. What happens if I stop?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This one is surprisingly difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I stop pushing, what happens?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I stop explaining, what happens?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I stop trying to control the outcome, what happens?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes stopping is not surrender.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is an experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You remove yourself from the system and watch what the system does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. What is the smallest thing I can learn next?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t necessarily need the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I might only need one more piece of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What could I discover in five minutes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What could I test?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What could I observe?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What tiny uncertainty could I remove?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mountain does not need to be solved all at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you just need to find out what&#8217;s behind the next tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. What if being baffled is the correct state right now?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the hardest one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because we are taught that not knowing is a deficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the map really does end here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is information you don&#8217;t have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are variables you cannot see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are things that haven&#8217;t happened yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are questions that reality has not answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes the most intelligent thing a person can say is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I don&#8217;t know.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I don&#8217;t know, therefore everything is hopeless.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I don&#8217;t know yet.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is enormous space inside those two words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think there is a particular trap for people who are good at figuring things out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, figuring things out becomes part of the identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I am the person who figures things out.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when something cannot be figured out, the problem becomes personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now I am not merely baffled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am failing at being myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is when the mind starts producing noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More theories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anything to avoid the terrible possibility that the appropriate response might simply be to stand still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But standing still is not the same as doing nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hunter stands still to hear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sailor stands still to read the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mage stands still when the spell has gone quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are moments when the next piece of information cannot be forced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has to arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when I have tried everything I know, I don&#8217;t necessarily need to know more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I need to become available to knowing something I don&#8217;t know yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a different skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It requires curiosity without desperation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Action without certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes, the willingness to let a question remain a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When the map fails, don&#8217;t draw harder.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Look up.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There is a particular kind of stuck that happens after you&#8217;ve already tried everything you know.
