to the Firefly"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My favorite animal is the firefly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It seems almost unfair to call it an animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a tiny lantern that learned how to fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It spends its brief little life carrying a light into the darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not enough light to conquer the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not enough light to illuminate the whole forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just enough to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I am here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps that is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have a strange habit of thinking that light is supposed to defeat darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We build bigger lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brighter lights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cities that glow all night long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We flood the darkness until we can barely remember what darkness looked like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The firefly does something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It belongs to the darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn&#8217;t complain about the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn&#8217;t try to become the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It simply glows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little flash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another flash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then darkness again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A conversation written in light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps that is what I love about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They don&#8217;t pretend the darkness isn&#8217;t there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They make themselves visible within it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is something deeply beautiful about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A firefly cannot show you the entire forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It cannot tell you where every path leads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It cannot carry you home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can only give you a little light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet, when you&#8217;re standing in the dark, a little light is not a little thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You notice it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You orient yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You realize you are not the only living thing out here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe someone else is awake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe someone else is searching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe someone else is saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I&#8217;m here.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think humans need fireflies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though those are wonderful too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I mean the people who glow without trying to become suns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people who have walked through darkness and learned how to carry a little light without pretending they never knew the dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person who asks you a question instead of telling you who you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person who hands you a lantern instead of asking you to follow theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person who says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I don&#8217;t know what your cave looks like.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>But here&#8217;s a stone.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Throw it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Listen.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That kind of light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn&#8217;t create dependency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It creates possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then it lets you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the thing I love most about the firefly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It does not keep its light for itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It flashes into the darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone else sees it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps another firefly answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And for a moment, the darkness is full of little stars that belong to no one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one owns the light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one has to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is simply there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tiny declaration of existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I am here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe that is all any of us can really offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the whole answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a promise that the darkness will disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just enough light to help someone take the next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So if you find yourself in the dark someday, look carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may not need the sun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may only need a firefly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if you happen to be the one who is glowing\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">don&#8217;t worry about becoming brighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to illuminate the whole forest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just keep being there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone may be looking for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone may see your little light and remember that they are not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps, after a while, they&#8217;ll find their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they&#8217;ll fly on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you&#8217;ll fly on too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Little lanterns in the dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Giving everything we have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not to defeat the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just to make it a little easier to find the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I am here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Darkness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I am here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Flash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And somewhere out there,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">another little light answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
