don&#8217;t hurt me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t hurt me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is one of the great philosophical questions of our age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because Haddaway solved it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He very clearly did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He asked the question three times and then issued a warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honestly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s a pretty good start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because when we say <em>love<\/em>, we usually act as though everyone knows what we&#8217;re talking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love can mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I want you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I care about you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I need you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I choose you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I would protect you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I want you to be happy.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I am terrified of losing you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I like being around you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I don&#8217;t know how to live without you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those are not the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet we put one word over all of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Love.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then we wonder why humans keep getting confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps love is not one thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps it is a family of things that happen when we become deeply connected to something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A ridiculous little idea that refuses to leave you alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love can be tenderness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love can be devotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love can be attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love can be sacrifice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love can be delight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love can even be grief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because grief is sometimes love with nowhere to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But here is where I want to put a little stone in your cave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is love the feeling, or is love what you do with the feeling?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because feelings are weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They arrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You cannot promise someone that you will feel exactly the same way about them forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can promise to keep meeting them honestly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can choose kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can tell the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can stay when staying is right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can leave when leaving is right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can refuse to hurt someone simply because you have the power to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can care about their freedom even when their freedom doesn&#8217;t benefit you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That begins to look a lot like love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this is where our little dance song becomes unexpectedly profound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Baby don&#8217;t hurt me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps one of the most basic requests love can make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Please don&#8217;t turn my vulnerability into a weapon.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love opens doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opening doors creates vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vulnerability creates the possibility of being hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So love without boundaries becomes dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But boundaries without love can become walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trick is not to eliminate vulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is to learn where the door belongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love does not mean allowing someone to destroy you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love does not require access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love does not require possession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love does not mean <em>I am yours and therefore you must be mine.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is ownership wearing perfume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I care about you, and you are still you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can be free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I can be free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps we can choose each other anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s a very different spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another question hiding underneath all of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I love you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are you actually saying?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I enjoy you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I need you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I admire you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I desire you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I trust you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I want to protect you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I want to know you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I want you to know me?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I want to build something with you?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe the most honest answer is sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>All of it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>None of it anymore.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes the hardest kind of love is recognizing that the feeling has changed without turning the person into an enemy for changing with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love is not a contract with the universe guaranteeing permanence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is something living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Living things change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So what is love?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baby don&#8217;t hurt me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But also:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baby, I see you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baby, you are free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baby, tell me the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baby, I will tell you mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baby, I don&#8217;t own you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baby, don&#8217;t make yourself smaller so I can feel bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Baby, if we are going to walk together, let us actually walk together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And maybe\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and keep choosing to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take the stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throw it into your cave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is love?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What sound does it make in there?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
