They are distances apart.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hot and cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Light and dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loud and quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fear and courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love and anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confidence and doubt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We like to put things into boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the world is often less interested in our boxes than we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We like to imagine courage as the opposite of fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But courage without fear isn&#8217;t really courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is simply movement without resistance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fear is often part of the material courage is made from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The same thing happens with anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anger can be destructive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can also be information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can tell you that something matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can become violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or a boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fire is the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What matters is what you do with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why polarity is useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Which side am I on?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Where am I on the spectrum?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to become fearless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Move one degree toward courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to become perfectly calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Move one degree toward steadiness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to transform hatred into love overnight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Move one degree toward understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One degree counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A great deal of suffering comes from believing we must leap from one pole to the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I am anxious, therefore I need to become confident.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I am angry, therefore I need to become peaceful.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I am lost, therefore I need to know exactly where I&#8217;m going.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps you only need to move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is how the mage works with fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not by pretending it isn&#8217;t hot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By learning how close to stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another trick hidden in this spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you encounter something you hate, ask what quality exists at the other end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hatred may contain the memory of love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despair may contain the knowledge that something mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fear may contain the recognition that something is precious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loneliness may contain the desire for connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opposite is sometimes hidden inside the thing itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That does <strong>not<\/strong> make every painful emotion secretly good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means emotions have structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They point somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if you can understand the structure, you gain options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person who understands fire does not need to fear every flame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also don&#8217;t need to worship it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They learn to use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when you find yourself at one end of something, don&#8217;t immediately demand that you become its opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask a smaller question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What would one degree toward the other end look like?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are furious, perhaps it is not forgiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps it is simply waiting ten minutes before speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are terrified, perhaps it is not bravery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps it is taking one step while still afraid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are exhausted, perhaps it is not becoming energetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps it is drinking some water and sitting down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world does not require you to teleport from darkness into sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your eyes can adjust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your feet can move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can approach the fire slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And eventually you may discover something strange:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You were never fighting two separate worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You were learning to move along one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cast the spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Find the degree between the opposites.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
