{"id":178,"date":"2026-08-08T04:53:15","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:53:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=178"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:53:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:53:15","slug":"the-spell-of-the-measuring-stick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=178","title":{"rendered":"The Spell of the Measuring Stick"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Law of Relativity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mountain is tall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until you stand beside another mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A winter is cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until you remember the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A difficult day is unbearable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until you discover what you were capable of surviving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We spend much of our lives measuring things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a measurement is never just a measurement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It requires a reference point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the eighth spell:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The thing you are measuring is not the whole story.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine two travelers climbing the same mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One has climbed mountains before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other has never left the valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same altitude, their experiences may be completely different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mountain did not change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reference point did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why comparison can be such a strange magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes comparison teaches you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it tortures you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You look at someone else&#8217;s life and think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I&#8217;m behind.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whose clock?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which mountain?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to what map?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can become miserable by comparing your beginning to someone else&#8217;s middle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or your private life to someone else&#8217;s public performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or your ordinary Tuesday to someone&#8217;s greatest achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measuring stick can become a weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So put it down sometimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But relativity has another use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can help you recognize change that is otherwise invisible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not to where you think you <em>should<\/em> be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To where you actually were.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What could you not do then that you can do now?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What once overwhelmed you that you now handle?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What used to seem impossible that has become ordinary?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growth is often difficult to see while you&#8217;re standing inside it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tree does not wake up every morning thinking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Excellent. I have grown three millimeters.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It simply keeps growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may be doing the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also wisdom in remembering that every perspective is incomplete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you are furious, the world looks different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you are frightened, the world looks different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you are in love, the world looks different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of those perspectives necessarily contain the entire truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They contain the world <strong>from here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That little phrase is useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>From here.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From this body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From this history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From this morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From this particular set of experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From this particular distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another person is standing somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can see something you cannot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can see something they cannot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This doesn&#8217;t mean everyone is equally correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means perspective is part of perception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when something feels absolute, try adding three words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>From where I stand.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>From where I stand.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They don&#8217;t care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>From where I stand.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;m terrible at this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>From where I stand.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the worst day of my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>From where I stand.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sentence becomes softer without becoming false.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes softness is enough room for new information to enter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spell is not telling you to minimize your pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pain matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Difficulty matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loss matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is simply reminding you that the view from one hill is not the entire landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Move a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the mountain changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you discover there was another road the whole time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So measure yourself if you must.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just choose a useful measuring stick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yesterday&#8217;s you is usually more interesting than somebody else&#8217;s highlight reel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cast the spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Change the distance.
