class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stone disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The water remembers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A ring moves outward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The stone did not ask permission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It simply entered the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the sixth spell:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Things continue after we stop touching them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A word can keep moving after it leaves your mouth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A kindness can keep moving after you forget giving it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A wound can keep moving too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So can a habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So can a decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So can a moment of courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We tend to imagine actions as isolated events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I did this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then that happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But life is less like a collection of events and more like a thread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One thing pulls on another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You wake tired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You become impatient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone notices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They become defensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You interpret their defensiveness as hostility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You become more defensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now both of you are having a completely different conversation than the one that started it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where did the problem begin?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There may not be a single answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is simply a thread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why cause and effect is not primarily a law about blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is a law about <strong>leverage.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If something is happening repeatedly, somewhere in the chain there may be a place where you can intervene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t control every cause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t control every effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you may control one link.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes one link is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Change the first breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Change the first word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Change the decision to answer immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Change the route you take home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Change what you practice every morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Change what you repeatedly expose yourself to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tiny causes can have surprisingly large effects when given enough time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A seed is tiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A tree is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A thought is tiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A habit is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A single conversation is tiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A relationship is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the part of the spell that makes ordinary moments important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t need to perform some enormous heroic act to change your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You need to become interested in seeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are you planting?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are you watering?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What are you feeding?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps most importantly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What are you rehearsing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because repetition is one of the great magics of being human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What you practice becomes easier to practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What you repeat becomes easier to repeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The path through the grass becomes a path because you keep walking there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So does the path in your mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is mercy in this spell too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a chain can be built, it can be interrupted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can apologize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can choose differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can put down what you have been carrying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can make one small cause that leads somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are not required to trace every thread back to its beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You only need to find the next knot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then loosen it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pond doesn&#8217;t judge the stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It simply makes ripples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reality does something similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Things happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They lead somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then something else happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your job isn&#8217;t to control the entire pond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your job is to become aware of what happens when you throw stones into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So before your next action, however small, pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>If I do this, what might this make easier next?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>What will this accomplish immediately?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What does this begin?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That question can change a life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because every action is also a beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cast the spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Follow the thread.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
