ATTACK TYPE N \u2014 NARCISSIST<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Classification:<\/strong> Social Predator
Threat Level:<\/strong> Variable
Preferred Habitat:<\/strong> Families, offices, intimate partnerships, social circles, online communities
Known Weakness:<\/strong> Genuine accountability
Known Immunities:<\/strong> Shame, reason, self-reflection
Primary Weapon:<\/strong> The victim’s own perception<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Narcissist is an unusual entity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike most predators, it does not necessarily stalk its prey from dark forests or ruined crypts. It may instead greet you warmly at a dinner table. It may become your friend. It may hire you. It may marry you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some accounts even report that the creature can appear charming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This should not be mistaken for harmlessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Attack Type N creature survives by establishing itself as the center of a small emotional kingdom. Within this kingdom, admiration is tribute, attention is currency, and disagreement is treason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, the creature may seem extraordinarily attentive. It studies its target carefully, learning their hopes, insecurities, ambitions, and wounds. This information is rarely collected for benevolent purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE FIRST SIGN: THE GLOWING ENTRANCE<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Many encounters begin pleasantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The creature may praise the target excessively, mirror their interests, insist upon an uncanny sense of connection, or behave as though the two have discovered some rare and immediate bond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Old manuscripts call this phase the Golden Mask<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inexperienced adventurer often thinks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At last, someone who really understands me.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The experienced adventurer knows better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No monster manual can tell you precisely when admiration becomes possession, but there is usually a moment when the praise stops being a gift and becomes an investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The creature expects a return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PRIMARY ATTACK: REALITY DISTORTION<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When challenged, the Narcissist rarely attacks the accusation directly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, it may alter the battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A conversation about what happened yesterday becomes a conversation about your tone. A complaint becomes an attack upon the creature. A boundary becomes evidence that you are selfish. An observable event becomes a matter of your supposedly unreliable memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This maneuver is known in several surviving texts as Gaslighting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its purpose is not necessarily to convince you of one particular falsehood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Its greater purpose is to make you uncertain that you are entitled to trust your own perception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once accomplished, the creature has gained a tremendous advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A confused opponent is an easily defeated opponent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SECONDARY ATTACK: PROJECTION<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The Narcissist possesses the remarkable ability to accuse its prey of qualities it cannot tolerate in itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cruelty may be called cruelty by the victim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Selfishness may be called selfishness by the victim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dishonesty may be called dishonesty by the victim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The creature may then announce, with considerable confidence, that the victim is the cruel, selfish, or dishonest one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scholars remain divided on whether this ability is conscious or instinctive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Field researchers generally agree that the distinction provides little protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SPECIAL ABILITY: MOVING THE GOALPOSTS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Should the adventurer satisfy the creature’s demands, new demands will frequently appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You apologized?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You didn’t apologize correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You explained yourself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You explained too much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You gave them space?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You abandoned them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You stayed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are suffocating them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This ability makes conventional conflict resolution extraordinarily difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The victim may spend years attempting to complete a quest whose requirements are rewritten immediately upon completion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no final level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no victory screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is only the next demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SPECIAL ABILITY: THE THIRD-PARTY SUMMON<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

When direct combat proves unsuccessful, the Narcissist may summon another creature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A relative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A coworker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The summoned party is often given a carefully edited account of the conflict in which the Narcissist appears wounded, reasonable, and tragically misunderstood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This technique is particularly effective because ordinary witnesses tend to assume that both combatants possess approximately equal access to the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DEFENSE: VICTIM ARMOR<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the most powerful defensive properties of Attack Type N is its ability to become the injured party whenever consequences approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The creature may display outrage, tears, indignation, withdrawal, accusations, or sudden emotional collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The effect is devastating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original question\u2014What did you do?<\/em>\u2014disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new question becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How could you hurt this person?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adventurers unfamiliar with the species often surrender at this stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DO NOT ATTEMPT: THE LOGIC DUEL<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A common mistake among novice hunters is to prepare evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They bring screenshots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Witnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carefully reconstructed timelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They believe that if the creature is shown incontrovertible proof, it will concede.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not a reliable strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Narcissist is not necessarily attempting to solve a factual dispute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The battle may instead concern dominance, reputation, control, or avoidance of shame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You cannot win a courtroom case against someone who keeps changing the courthouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

THE CREATURE’S TRUE WEAKNESS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Curiously, Attack Type N is often vulnerable to something that feels almost anticlimactic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

boundaries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not accusations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not elaborate speeches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not revenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seasoned adventurer eventually learns to stop asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do I make this creature understand what it has done?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and starts asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What will I do if it continues?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is a profound tactical shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Narcissist may be able to argue with your explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may ridicule your feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may recruit witnesses against you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may rewrite the history of the kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it cannot control a boundary you are willing to enforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FIELD NOTE<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Not every selfish person is a Narcissist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not every manipulator has Narcissistic Personality Disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And not every unpleasant encounter with another human constitutes an encounter with a monster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The old manuals were fond of simple classifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human beings are not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still, Attack Type N remains a useful creature to recognize\u2014not because naming the beast gives you power over it, but because recognizing its behavior may prevent you from mistaking the battlefield for a courtroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you find yourself endlessly defending your memory, explaining your intentions, apologizing for having boundaries, and attempting to earn basic decency from someone who repeatedly moves the conditions of peace…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Close the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leave the dungeon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not need to defeat the monster to stop feeding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
