system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We sometimes talk about ego as though it were a little tyrant sitting inside the head, making demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Be important.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Protect yourself.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Win.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Don&#8217;t look stupid.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Remember what they did to you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Make sure they know who you are.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then spiritual practice comes along and says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Destroy the ego.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps that is like trying to achieve enlightenment by deleting the operating system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The computer may be free of Windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may also be extremely difficult to use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ego might work the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It takes an enormous amount of raw experience and turns it into something navigable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mine.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yours.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Danger.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Safe.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Past.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Future.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Reward.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Threat.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This is who I am.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This is what happened to me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These aren&#8217;t necessarily truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They&#8217;re operating instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ego gives a human animal a model of itself that can be used to move through the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And like any operating system, it can accumulate strange programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Old defenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Old assumptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Old permissions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Old processes running quietly in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of them were useful once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of them are obsolete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of them were installed by people we no longer even remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And occasionally one of them crashes the whole machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So perhaps the practice isn&#8217;t:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Delete the ego.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps it is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Learn the system.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watch what launches automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice what triggers a response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice which thoughts arrive before you consciously choose them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice which identities you defend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice which permissions you have accidentally given fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice which old programs keep consuming resources even though the original problem is gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This also explains something strange about ego dissolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the ego is an operating system, then even the desire to destroy the ego can become an ego process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system can create a program called:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I am someone who has transcended the system.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And suddenly the operating system has installed a spirituality-themed identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very clever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So maybe enlightenment isn&#8217;t getting rid of the operating system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it&#8217;s realizing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I am not the operating system.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am the one experiencing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The distinction is enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A thought can appear without being obeyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A feeling can arise without becoming a command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An identity can be useful without becoming a prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A story can be remembered without being continuously reenacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system can run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to become every process it generates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes the most advanced thing you can do with an operating system is not replace it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s simply stop confusing it with the machine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ego can remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let it handle the ordinary human business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The little character walking around inside the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let the character have a character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just don&#8217;t mistake the interface for the whole of existence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t need to uninstall yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You just need to learn where the buttons are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps, every once in a while,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">close a program that doesn&#8217;t need to be running
