has disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have no ego.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don&#8217;t need recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am beyond attachment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have surrendered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have dissolved into everything.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And somewhere underneath all of this, a very small voice may be whispering:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Look how little ego I have.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ego is not necessarily the part of you that thinks highly of itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it is the part that desperately wants to become someone who no longer needs to think highly of itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because ego dissolution can become another identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spiritual person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The detached person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The enlightened person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person who has transcended ordinary concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person who doesn&#8217;t care what anyone thinks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person who has &#8220;seen through&#8221; everyone else&#8217;s ego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The costume becomes very difficult to see because the costume is made of humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And there is nothing wrong with humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is whether you are free to put the costume down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Tell<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is one of the simplest tests I know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What happens when someone treats you like you are ordinary?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not enlightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not deep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not wise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just another human being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If something inside you becomes offended, defensive, eager to explain, or desperate to prove that you really <em>are<\/em> different&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">there may still be an identity being protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another tell:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can you be wrong without needing the mistake to become part of your philosophy?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can you simply say,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was wrong, but that was actually part of my awakening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was wrong because I was transcending the ego.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then continue living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an even quieter test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can you stop dissolving the ego?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have to constantly monitor yourself for ego, eliminate ego, transcend ego, purify ego, observe ego, defeat ego&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">then ego has simply acquired a new job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has become the manager of your spiritual development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal was never to create a perfect person who contains no ego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That person would probably be exhausting to be around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The useful thing is much simpler:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice when the self is being constructed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice when it is being defended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice when you are trying to become someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then loosen your grip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to kill the ego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to worship it either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can let it be what it is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">a useful pattern for navigating a human life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you will care about your reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you will want to win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you will want to be admired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you will be petty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you will be magnificent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you will contradict yourself five minutes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are a human being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deepest freedom may not be becoming someone who has no ego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may be becoming someone who <strong>doesn&#8217;t have to protect an idea of who they are.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even the idea of being egoless can be put down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially that one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because when there is nothing left to prove about who you are&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">you can finally get on with the business of being alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a much quieter kind of freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And strangely enough,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">it doesn&#8217;t need to call itself enlightenment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
