“When I die, I hope I’m fancy dust.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2014 Tales from the Universe<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is something wonderfully ridiculous about caring what happens to you after you die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Think about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’re dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And somehow there is still a tiny voice inside you saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yes, but I’d like to look good.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I’m going to become dust, I don’t want to be ordinary dust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want to be fancy dust.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps something with a little sparkle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe the kind of dust that catches the sunlight when somebody opens a window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the universe is going to recycle me, I would at least like to leave an interesting residue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mage’s Last Concern<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Death is one of the great places where the ego reveals itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ego is remarkably committed to continuing to have opinions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What happens when I die?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Will anyone remember me?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Where will I go?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“What will become of me?”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notice the wording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What will become of me?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As though the universe has a little storage locker labeled with our name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As though existence owes us a continuation of our particular arrangement of atoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As though the great mystery of death is primarily concerned with what happens to me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s funny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because death is precisely the point where the “me” we’re so concerned about stops being the thing it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The character leaves the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we’re standing backstage worrying about the costume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fancy Dust<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

But perhaps that’s why I like the idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“When I die, I hope I’m fancy dust.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It doesn’t pretend to solve death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It doesn’t construct an elaborate theology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It doesn’t demand certainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It just laughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe I become dust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make it fancy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is something freeing about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mage doesn’t need to know exactly what happens after the final page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mage can simply admit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have no idea.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then enjoy the absurdity of having preferences about it anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Universe Doesn’t Need My Resume<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We spend so much time trying to leave something behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An accomplishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A body of work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And there is nothing wrong with any of those things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there is a strange irony in trying desperately to become permanent in a universe that is built almost entirely out of change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stars die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mountains erode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oceans move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Civilizations rise and disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even the atoms in our bodies have histories that stretch far beyond us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And somehow I am sitting here thinking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yes, but please remember me.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The universe might respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“My dear, I remember everything by turning it into something else.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is a very different kind of immortality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Afterlife of Everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Maybe I don’t need to survive death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe what matters is that nothing is wasted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warmth I gave somebody.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strange little sentence that helped someone through a difficult night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The food I cooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tree I planted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The person who became a little more courageous because I believed in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of those things require me to remain present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They continue without me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s perhaps the most beautiful irony of all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We want to survive forever so that the things we love can continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But perhaps the greatest gift we can give the world is something that doesn’t require us to be there.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And Still…<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

I still hope I’m fancy dust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don’t want to become so spiritually sophisticated that I lose the ability to make ridiculous requests of the universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want to be able to look at the great mystery and say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I don’t know what’s going to happen.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“But if I’m going to become dust…”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

“…make it fancy.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe that’s not a failure to transcend the ego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe it’s a little wink at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, little ego.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You would like the universe to have excellent postmortem accommodations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I see you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you are adorable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But here’s the secret:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t actually need to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t need to know what happens after death to make today meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t need an eternal guarantee before you love someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t need to know where the road ends before you walk it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you don’t need to solve the universe before you are allowed to enjoy being here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One day the mage will put down the staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spell will end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The atoms will go wandering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The name will become a memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perhaps somewhere, somehow, a little bit of what you were will catch the sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe that’s enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe it’s even beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if not\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

at least make me fancy dust.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
