{"id":142,"date":"2026-08-08T02:55:02","date_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:55:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=142"},"modified":"2026-08-08T02:55:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T02:55:02","slug":"my-favorite-holiday-is-watching-the-leaves-fall","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=142","title":{"rendered":"My Favorite Holiday Is Watching the Leaves Fall"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think autumn might be my favorite holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not Halloween.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not New Year&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Autumn.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The season when the trees stop pretending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is something deeply honest about watching the leaves fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trees don&#8217;t apologize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They don&#8217;t panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They don&#8217;t try to hold on forever because someone might think they are failing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They simply become beautiful, and then they let go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One leaf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then thousands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The whole forest participates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And nobody calls it a tragedy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Most Honest Holiday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We spend an enormous amount of our lives trying to preserve things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our youth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our accomplishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our good days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our stories about who we are supposed to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We decorate ourselves with things that say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Look. I am still here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then autumn arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trees say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Yes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are still here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And we are letting go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no contradiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is what I love about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Autumn doesn&#8217;t pretend that loss isn&#8217;t loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It simply refuses to believe that loss makes something meaningless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaf was beautiful while it was on the tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is beautiful as it changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And eventually it falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was always part of the leaf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Holiday of Impermanence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is something beautiful about celebrating a thing you cannot keep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t go outside to stop the leaves from falling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You go <strong>to watch them fall.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You look upward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You walk beneath them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You sit somewhere quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You notice the colors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You let the moment happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And eventually the color disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The holiday ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s the part I love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The celebration was never about keeping the leaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was about <strong>being there while they were here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Spell for Letting Go<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I were writing this into my spellbook, I think the spell would be very simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Let the beautiful thing finish being beautiful.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s harder than it sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We often think love means holding something tightly enough that it cannot leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps sometimes love means being present enough to witness its changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A child grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A friendship changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A home becomes a memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A season passes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A version of yourself disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the mage watches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because the mage doesn&#8217;t care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the mage cares enough to <strong>be there for the whole thing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The middle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The falling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Trees Don&#8217;t Call It Failure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine if trees had human minds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine the maple leaf saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;I used to be green. Something has gone terribly wrong.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;I&#8217;m changing color. I must be broken.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;Everyone else is falling. I need to try harder to stay attached.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We would recognize the absurdity immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tree isn&#8217;t failing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tree is <strong>being a tree.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The leaf is not dying because it failed to remain young.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is completing its season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps we are like that too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are versions of us that were exactly right for one season of our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes we mistake that change for failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;I&#8217;m not who I used to be.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As though that were an accusation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Autumn says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Of course you&#8217;re not.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at the trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My Favorite Holiday<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Autumn is my favorite holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the holiday where nothing is promised to last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decorations are alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decorations are dying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The celebration is the changing itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps that is why it feels so honest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Spring can promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Summer can indulge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Winter can endure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But autumn tells the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Everything changes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Everything passes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And it can still be beautiful.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I want to sit beneath the trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want to watch the leaves fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want to let something beautiful end without demanding that it become ugly simply because it ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when the last leaf falls, I don&#8217;t want to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;How do I make it stay?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I want to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Wasn&#8217;t it beautiful?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then keep walking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The forest already knows the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I think autumn might be my favorite holiday.
