You cast the spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then something goes wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Something hurts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Your first instinct is to check the spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What did I do wrong?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe the incantation was incorrect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe the ingredients were wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe the circle was imperfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe you aren’t good enough at magic yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So you try to fix it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You push the feeling down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You distract yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You analyze it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You argue with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You try to become the sort of mage who wouldn’t feel this way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But the spell keeps producing the same result.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hurt.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Eventually you have to consider an uncomfortable possibility:<\/p>\n\n\n\n What if the spell isn’t misfiring?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n What if it’s working?<\/p>\n\n\n\n A mage who doesn’t understand a spell’s feedback can mistake information for failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The fire burns your hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You don’t conclude that fire is malfunctioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You learn something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The body says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n That hurts.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n And somehow we expect ourselves to respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Incorrect. Please stop producing that data.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n But pain is information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not necessarily a command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not necessarily a prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not necessarily proof that something is wrong with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes it is simply the part of you that still knows something matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And this is where the strange little spell appeared in my own head:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Hurt is the you that loves you more than the you who gave up.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n At first, even that sounded wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Too poetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Too convenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe the spell had misfired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So I looked closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Suppose a person has been hurt so many times that they learn to abandon themselves before anyone else can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They stop asking for what they need.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They stop expecting kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They stop noticing what they feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They become very good at enduring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then something happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A boundary gets crossed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Someone says something cruel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something old is touched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A dream is lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A relationship changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And suddenly there is pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The natural response can be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Make it stop.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n But what if the pain is not the enemy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What if something inside you is saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n No. This matters.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Not because it wants to torture you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because it still cares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There may be a part of you that has continued loving you through every terrible decision, every compromise, every abandonment of your own needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You may have learned to ignore that part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But it didn’t disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It learned how to hurt loudly enough to be heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That isn’t necessarily the spell breaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That may be the spell reporting accurately.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n This is where the mage has to learn a harder spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Acceptance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Acceptance does not mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “This pain is good.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n It doesn’t mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “What happened to me was okay.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n It doesn’t mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I should keep hurting.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n And it certainly doesn’t mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “I am powerless to change anything.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Acceptance can be much simpler:<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is what is happening right now.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The mage stops fighting the feedback long enough to read it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something hurts.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Where?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What does it seem to care about?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What boundary was crossed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What was lost?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What was needed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n What am I pretending doesn’t matter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n The pain becomes information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And once the information has been received, you are free to act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is a subtle trap here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can become angry at yourself for being hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then you are hurt and<\/strong> fighting the fact that you are hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Now there are two wounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The first is the original pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The second is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n I shouldn’t feel this.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The mage can drop the second wound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not because the first one isn’t real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because fighting reality doesn’t make reality less real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Yes. This hurts.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n And breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Yes. I wish it didn’t.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n And breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Yes. Some part of me is hurting because some part of me still cares.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n And breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You don’t have to solve it immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You don’t have to make the pain beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You don’t have to turn suffering into wisdom before you’re allowed to feel it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You can simply receive the message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps that is the strange thing about being human.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The parts of us we most desperately want to silence are not always trying to destroy us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes they are trying to protect something we stopped protecting ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The hurt says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n This mattered.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The anger says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something crossed a line.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The grief says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something was loved.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The fear says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Something matters enough to lose.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n These signals can become distorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They can become too loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They can point toward old dangers that aren’t present anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But that doesn’t make the existence of the signal a failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A smoke alarm can be malfunctioning and still be telling you something important about the fact that there is smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The mage’s task isn’t to worship the alarm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It is to listen.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Then investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Then act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And sometimes, after all the fighting, you discover that the thing you thought was sabotaging your spell was actually the part of the spell that was working.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You weren’t broken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You were receiving feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And somewhere underneath the hurt was a stubborn little piece of you saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n No.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I still care about you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n I’m not going to let you disappear without making a sound.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n So perhaps the spell was never:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Make the hurt go away.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps the spell was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n “Listen when something inside you says you matter.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n And perhaps acceptance is simply the moment the mage finally stops arguing with the spell long enough to hear it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" You cast the spell.
