FIELD REPORT
The Witness doesn’t fix anything.
It doesn’t give advice.
It doesn’t tell you what you should have done.
It simply stays.
And sometimes that is the first safe thing that has happened in a very long time.
ENCOUNTER LOG
He told the story badly.
He kept stopping.
Forgot parts.
Got other parts out of order.
At one point he laughed, even though there wasn’t anything funny about it.
“Sorry,” he said.
The person across from him shook their head.
“Don’t apologize.”
So he kept going.
He told them what happened.
Then he told them what happened next.
Then he reached the part he’d never said aloud.
His voice got smaller.
He looked down.
“I don’t know if that sounds crazy.”
The other person waited a moment.
Then said:
“No. It sounds like it hurt.”
He looked up.
That was the first time he believed someone.
FIELD NOTE
The Witness has a peculiar talent.
It doesn’t need to experience your wound to believe that you have one.
It doesn’t need every detail to be perfect.
It doesn’t need you to explain why you reacted the way you did.
It doesn’t need you to perform your pain correctly.
It can simply say:
“I saw you.”
And sometimes that is enough to let a person stop spending energy proving that something happened.
ENCOUNTER WARNING
There is a difference between being witnessed and being examined.
An examination asks:
What is wrong with you?
A Witness asks:
What happened to you?
One searches for defects.
The other makes room for a story.
Be careful which rooms you enter.
ENTITY STATUS
THE WITNESS — PRESENT.
You don’t have to make the story beautiful.
You don’t have to tell it perfectly.
You don’t even have to tell all of it.
Sometimes you just need somebody who will stay long enough to hear the part you were afraid nobody would believe.
