Appearance: Usually invisible.
Danger Level: Low.
Feeding Pattern: Nostalgia.

A Memory Leech is an entity that survives by attaching itself to something ordinary and waiting.

It may choose a smell.

Fresh bread.

Rain on warm pavement.

An old perfume.

The particular soap someone used when you were a child.

Nothing remarkable.

Until you smell it twenty years later.

And suddenly—

you’re eight years old.

You can see the room.

You know what the curtains looked like.

You remember where everyone was sitting.

You can almost hear somebody laughing in the next room.

The Song

Songs are particularly dangerous specimens.

You haven’t heard it in fifteen years.

Then it comes through a speaker in a grocery store.

Three seconds.

That’s all it takes.

Suddenly you’re standing in a different car.

A different summer.

Maybe someone you haven’t thought about in years is sitting beside you.

The song ends.

The grocery store remains.

But for a moment, two places occupied the same piece of your mind.

That’s the work of a Memory Leech.

The Strange Part

The Memory Leech doesn’t actually steal anything.

It does the opposite.

It returns something.

Sometimes something you wanted back.

Sometimes something you had completely forgotten.

A photograph can do it.

So can a recipe.

A particular brand of pencil.

The smell of a swimming pool.

The sound of an old fan.

One tiny sensory detail can open a door you didn’t know was still there.

Memory Leeches are unpredictable.

You cannot always choose what they bring back.

A smell might return your happiest summer.

It might return someone you miss.

It might return both at once.

This is why nostalgia can feel strangely heavy.

You’re not only remembering something beautiful.

Notice what happens when an ordinary thing suddenly makes you stop.
