Threshold

— Rogue Entity Encounters

Common Habitat: Doorways, airports, hospitals, schools, train stations, front porches.
Appearance: Usually a place you have walked through hundreds of times.
Danger Level: Mild. Occasionally life-changing.

A Threshold is a place that seems to know something is changing.

It may be nothing more than a doorway.

One room on one side.

Another room on the other.

But humans have an unusual habit of attaching enormous significance to places where one thing becomes another.

A front porch.

You stand there before leaving home.

Then you step across it.

Home + 1.

Now you’re going somewhere.

A hospital entrance works differently.

You walk through it as one person.

You may leave as another.

Threshold + 2.

An airport gate is particularly powerful.

You sit there surrounded by strangers and carry-on luggage, waiting for a number to appear on a screen.

On one side is the life you know.

On the other is somewhere you haven’t arrived yet.

The plane hasn’t even moved.

And somehow you’re already gone.

The Doorway

Graduation ceremonies are full of Thresholds.

So are weddings.

Funerals.

First days of school.

Last days of work.

Moving into a new house.

Leaving an old one.

There is often nothing physically special about the place.

The magic is in the timing.

You arrive one way.

You cross.

You leave another way.

The doorway merely happened to be standing there.

Field Note

Thresholds are particularly sensitive to before and after.

The room may be identical.

The person entering it may not be.

This makes Thresholds excellent locations for Apparitions.

A doorway in an ordinary house can become:

the doorway where I first met her.

A train station can become:

the place where Dad left.

A school entrance can become:

the last place I was a child.

The architecture remains.

The meaning accumulates.

Identification Test

Stand somewhere that has marked a transition in your life.

Then ask:

“Who was I the last time I stood here?”

If the question produces a surprisingly long answer—

you have found a Threshold.

Do not be alarmed.

Thresholds are rarely dangerous.

They simply have a habit of reminding you that you are not the same person who crossed them last time.

And sometimes that is the strangest thing about a doorway:

you walk through it every day, and one day you realize you’ve become someone else on the other side.
