Common Habitat: Everywhere humans have memories.
Appearance: Usually an ordinary object.
Danger Level: Depends entirely on who you ask.

An Apparition is what happens when an ordinary thing starts carrying more than itself.

Consider an apple.

A good apple.

Red enough to catch the afternoon sun, cool from the shade of the orchard, with that little snap when you bite through the skin.

Just an apple?

Sure.

Unless it came from the farm you used to visit every summer.

The farm with the crooked red barn.

The gravel road that rattled the old car windows.

The rows of trees disappearing over the hill.

Apple + 1.

And your grandmother used to drive you there.

She knew which farmer to ask for.

She’d lean over the steering wheel, squinting into the sunlight, and tell you stories the whole way there.

Sometimes she bought a whole basket.

Sometimes she gave you one before you even left the parking lot.

Apple + 2.

Maybe she always picked the best one for you.

Maybe you can still remember the sound of her laugh when you insisted you could tell which apples were sweetest.

Maybe, years later, you can still remember the smell of that old car.

Apple + 3.

Now someone else picks up the same apple and says,

“What’s so special about this?”

Congratulations.

You’ve encountered an Apparition.

The object hasn’t changed.

You have.

That is the clever part.

Apparitions are not necessarily ghosts.

They are things with enough history attached to them that their meaning becomes part of what you see.

A wedding ring is a particularly durable specimen.

So is an old recipe card.

A childhood house.

A battered stuffed animal.

A particular song.

The coffee mug nobody is allowed to throw away.

Approach with caution.

Not because the Apparition will hurt you.

Because someone may say:

“Oh, that belonged to my grandmother.”

And suddenly the old mug isn’t a mug anymore.

It’s a kitchen.

It’s a morning.

It’s somebody humming while the coffee brews.

It’s a person who isn’t here anymore, somehow still arriving whenever you pick it up.

That’s an Apparition.

The safest way to identify one is to ask:

“What’s the story behind this?”

Then stand back.

Humans are remarkably good at making ordinary things extraordinary.
