There is a comforting idea that somewhere ahead of us, there is a correct path.
The right choice.
The right person.
The right life.
If only we could see far enough, we would know which road to take.
But roads rarely work that way.
Usually there is a fork.
You know where you are.
You know something about where you came from.
You may have a destination in mind.
But the road ahead is partly hidden.
So you choose.
Then you walk.
This is the strange part:
The choice does not have to be perfect to be real.
You can choose badly.
You can choose well.
You can change direction.
You can discover that the road you hated led somewhere beautiful.
You can discover that the road you loved ended somewhere you didn’t expect.
There is no version of choice that gives you complete information.
If there were, it would barely be choice.
It would be calculation.
Perhaps freedom is not knowing what will happen.
Perhaps freedom is being able to answer what does.
The world presents you with something.
You respond.
Then the world changes.
Then you respond again.
Back and forth.
Not control.
Conversation.
This means you are never entirely powerless.
But you are never entirely in control either.
You cannot choose the weather.
You can choose whether to carry an umbrella.
You cannot choose another person’s heart.
You can choose what you offer yours.
You cannot choose whether a door closes.
You can choose whether to look for another.
And sometimes there is no good choice.
Sometimes every road hurts.
That does not mean you failed to find the secret correct answer.
Sometimes life simply gives you a hard fork.
You choose the road you can walk.
Then you walk it.
Perhaps that is enough.
Fancy Dust has never chosen a road.
It has been known to appear on both sides of one simultaneously.
We are investigating.
Until then, there is a fork ahead.
You do not need to know where every road ends.
You only need to decide what you will do
with the next step.
